Ginkgo
A leaf harvest.
- Plant a male cultivar; female fruit smells.
- Harvest green leaves before they drop.
- Seeds are toxic; keep them away from children.
Three autumn harvests — leaf, fruit and flower — compared by timing, space and the safety detail that matters.
The table compares the growing decision only. Safety flags are a prompt to read the profile and speak to a clinician, not a ranking.
| Decision | Ginkgo | Jujube | Chrysanthemum |
|---|---|---|---|
| Habit | Large tree | Small tree | Herbaceous perennial |
| Hardiness | 3–8 | 5–10 | 5–9 |
| Light | Full sun | Full sun | Full sun |
| Water | Medium | Low to medium | Medium |
| Harvest | Leaves in autumn | Fruit in autumn | Flowers in autumn |
| Main failure | Female fruit and seed toxicity | Heat, thorns and suckers | Night light delays buds |
| Safety flag | Seeds toxic; bleeding; seizures | Stone; sugar; diabetes medication | Asteraceae; immunosuppressants; photosensitivity |
| Best for | A leaf harvest | A fruit tree | Autumn flowers |
Autumn timing shifts with latitude. Harvest by the plant's signal, not by the month alone.
The autumn harvest calendar
Autumn is the harvest season for all three, but the crop is different. Ginkgo leaves are gathered before they drop; jujube fruit is picked as it colours or left to wrinkle; chrysanthemum flowers are cut as they open. The same month can be right for one and wrong for another.
The safety details are also different. Ginkgo seeds are toxic even though the leaf is used; jujube fruit is food but its stone is hard and its sugar matters; chrysanthemum is a daisy-family flower with allergy and drug-interaction cautions. Plan the harvest by part, not by the word 'autumn'.
